The Girl In Yellow Boots

Here I was, driving in the harsh rain from work.My old mustang speeding along the road.It is becoming increasingly difficult to see outside in the dark but I step on the accelerator anyway as I'm already late for a date.A blind date, that my brother set me up, with one of his ex-girlfriends.I was so desperate that I agreed to meet her after work. Also, the other reason I agreed was because I knew  the girl was quite a bombshell.I turn up the heater a little bit more.
I watch the wipers move up and down on the window screen.I rub my glasses with my fingers as they are getting foggy.Thankfully I don't see any other cars.I look at the clock on the radio.I'm about thirty minutes late.I feel lonely,so I click on the radio. It's playing some kind of rock music which did not help at all, the throbbing in my head from all that stupid filing in the office.I reach my hand to tune to another station, not taking my eyes off the road.I could't find the right knob even after feeling around for a few seconds.I look at the damn thing for a split second and the next thing I hear is a thud on the front of the car, then on the roof and then the trunk and then silence except for the rain lashing away on my roof.I hit the brakes with a screech.I curse to myself and then  contemplate for a minute whether to get out and check it out.I check my rear view mirror but I don't see anything in it. I grab my coat from the back seat, put it on and then slowly opened the door.

The restaurant wasn't far away from here.I check my bonnet for any damage.Thankfully, there is none.I slowly walk towards the back of my car hoping to find a gruesome sight.I'm surprised to see there is nothing.I check underneath the car, just to make sure. The radio inside  starts playing the song...Jeepers Creepers.A chill goes down my spine and so I  tighten my raincoat. It didn't help at all.I was completely drenched now. I walk to the side of the road to check for any bodies or traces of blood. But all  is see another car's headlights approaching from the distance. With my car parked in the middle of the road,I run to the driver's side get in and slam the door.I start the engines and start moving.I reach the restaurant. It must have been a deer or some other dumb animal. There were a lot of deers in these parts of the woods,I thought to myself.I look forward to my evening ahead.

I push the revolving glass doors to enter the elegantly lit five-star hotel. The restaurant looks empty albeit for an old couple and another man in a suit eating all alone.Boy,business must be slow here. There in  the far corner of the room, sitting and drinking wine ,is Jessica. I leave my coat to the attender who looks at it with disgust.I pretend I don't see it.I rush to her table and sit down. She is clearly angry at my tardiness."Finally you're here! I thought you were going to stand me up! Where were you Adam? You're soaking wet for crying out loud!",she was pissed."Sorry ,I ran into some car trouble on the way and the rain kinda slowed me down".I tell her.”I don't want to hear your excuses! Let's order something already! I'm famished ! ".I pull the chair and sit down. The waiter come to takes our order. She orders a salad and I order a medium rare steak. The throbbing in my head is back now.I guess it never stopped. We wait for our food to come in silence.

She is texting someone, probably my brother, telling him about the disastrous way, the evening was unraveling.I look at her.She is wearing a black sleeved dress that accentuates her figure. With her light blonde hair in bangs ,thick black mascara and her high cheek bones made her look like a model.I could strike gold,if I played the rest of the evening smoothly. Our food arrived. The waiter placed the food in front of us.He asked us if we wished for anything else.I told him no.As he walked away,I see a woman sitting at the table where the old couple earlier sat.Her red auburn hair was matted across her forehead and the yellow raincoat she was wearing was dripping wet.It was still raining outside.Jessica had already finished half of her salad by now.The steak smelled great but I couldn't eat.I was looking at the woman ,probably a girl but I couldn't make out as she had her head hung low and was staring at something on the floor. She looked sad and forlorn. Then she lifted her head and then looked straight right at me.Her eerie stare made the hair on my arms stand up.None of the waiters bothered to take her order. They acted as if she were invisible to them. She was still staring at me when abruptly she stood up and walked towards the exit.I catch a glimpse of her yellow boots.I look at Jessica ,who's  still chewing her salad ,a bit too loudly for my taste.I jump out of my chair,my steak untouched, and run after the girl. The girl in the yellow boots.I can still hear Jessica shouting my name as I  grab my coat and push  the revolving doors, out of the restaurant.

I'm outside now and it's still raining.I look on either side of the street but I don't see her.The girl in yellow boots.I walk a few feet away from the restaurant.I catch a glimpse of her yellow raincoat now and run after her.I'm completely wet again now.She is running in the direction from where, I came from.I reach the exact spot where I hit the deer before but the girl has now vanished. No,wait there she is sitting on the side of the road. She has her face buried in her knees.Even in the loud rain,I can hear her crying.I slowly inch towards her.I'm now standing right in front of her but she doesn't look up at me.I gently touch her shoulder and all of a sudden ,she jumps up and shouts,” MY HUSBAND MISTER!! You've got to help me find him! He...he went out to collect some firewood ,but....but he didn't come back.So...so I came looking for him,you see. Please, you've got to help me!".She was shaking ,as she spoke."What makes you think he's around here? What if he's farther away, near the main road or something?",I ask her  looking around."'No,no,no....I don't think he'll go far mister. Our cabin's right there in the woods, you see,so he ain't gonna go far to collect firewood.",she says not looking at my face.I am too tired and wet to ask anymore questions,so I agree to help her look for her husband ,in the rain.I've completely forgotten to ask her what she was doing in the restaurant if she wasn't going to dine there or why she was giving me such an icy stare. We decide to look on opposite sides of the road.

I see the skid marks of my car on the road I had made earlier.I turn to see her looking around in the tress closer to the road.I reach the edge of the road .I see nothing in the rain. There is not much light.I can see, vaguely, something lying near the storm drain now.I walk a bit closer to see what it is ,not getting off the road.It is the body of a man, all covered in blood.I take a step back. His jaw is completely mangled and the bone on his left leg is jutting out.I almost puke upon seeing this but I control myself. He is wearing a yellow raincoat similar to the one worn by the girl but he had on just one yellow boot. This was her husband all right. It suddenly strikes me that it wasn't a deer I hit on the road,it was HIM.But how did he end up way over here. Then the last piece of the puzzle falls into place as I  turn to see the girl in yellow boots swing the blade right into my neck.

I'm blinking now.I see my headless body a few feet away, the blood gushing out, washed away by the rain. The girl in the yellow boots drops her axe and grabs hold of my legs and then pulls my body off the road. The throbbing in my head has stopped now.My vision is now blurry. As I close my eyes, the last thing I feel is her grab my hair and pick me up or what's left of me anyway and the last thing I hear is her laughing ,laughing like a maniac.
